Brooks, Chargers take second

Led by state runnerup Emily Brooks, Northwood finished second in last week's NCHSAA 2-A golf championship at Longleaf Golf Club in Southern Pines.

Brooks carded rounds of 79 on Monday and Tuesday for a 158 total, just one in back of medalist Isabella Rusher of Salisbury. Maggie Denny tied for 15th place with a 180 total, while Rachel Wynne came in 24th with a total of 191.

With the top three individuals from each team counting toward the team standings, Salisbury won with a team score of 496. Northwood was second at 529, followed by East Surry (541) and Elkin (560).

Meanwhile, in the 3-A championship at nearby Foxfire Village, Caroline Jones of Chapel Hill High School competed as an at-large entry and earned 10th place with her 88-88 - 176. That was one in front of Rebecca Wiley of Cardinal Gibbons. She led the Crusaders (555 total) to third place in the team standings behind champion Thomasville Ledford (541) and runner-up Northern Guilford (545).

East Chapel Hill's Becca Halter took time from her field hockey duties to compete at-large in the 4-A tournament at the Pinehurst Resort's No. 6 course, shooting a two-day total of 186. She was the lone player from the PAC-6 to qualify for championship.

Pfafftown Ronald Reagan sophomore Victoria Allred shot the day's best round on Tuesday (74) and went on to capture the individual 4-A title with a 149 total. Raleigh Athens Drive won its third team title in the last four years, putting together a 481 total, 10 shots ahead of Reagan.

Perone nominated for Heisman

Francesca Perone of Carrboro High School has been selected as one of 20 finalists for the 2011 Wendy's High School Heisman Award.

From an original list of 48,000 seniors who applied nationwide, 1,595 applicants came from North Carolina and have been narrowed down to the state's 20 finalists. Perone, who plays soccer and runs cross-country at Carrboro, is the only athlete from the Triangle, male or female, who was selected as a finalist.

Created in 1994 by Wendy's and the Heisman Memorial Trust, the Wendy's High School Heisman Award recognizes outstanding high school seniors nationwide who excel in athletics, academics and community leadership.

State winners and national finalists will be announced Nov. 4. One male and one female national winner will be announced Dec. 9 in New York City during a televised ceremony on ESPN networks.

Women's lacrosse attacker Corey Donohoe, track and field decathlete Mateo Sossah and football quarterback T.J. Yates are the recipients of the 2011 Patterson Medals, the most prestigious awards presented to student-athletes at the University of North Carolina.

The Patterson Medal is based primarily on career athletic accomplishment at UNC. Sportsmanship and leadership are also considered. The award was first given in 1924 by Dr. Joseph Patterson in memory of his brother, John Durand Patterson, and is still presented by the family.

Alston scores in the Smith Center

Former East Chapel Hill basketball star Ty Alston fulfilled a life-long goal recently when he played varsity basketball in the Smith Center.

The son of Charisse Edwards and the late Harry Alston (a standout at Chapel Hill High School in his day,) Alston grew up as a devoted Carolina basketball fan. He played on coach Ray Hartsfield's East Chapel Hill teams before matriculating.

Now a junior for Pembroke, Alston played 10 minutes for the Braves in their 100-58 loss Oct. 28 at Carolina.
