CHAPEL HILL - Rematches will be the order of the day for the second round of the N.C. High School Field Hockey Association playoffs.
Seeded No. 8 in the NCFHA's 16-team bracket, Chapel Hill (6-11) will play No. 1 West Forsyth (11-8) on Tuesday. It marks the fourth meeting this year between the Tigers and Titans. West Forsyth won each of the previous three matches by one-goal margins, the first one being decided in overtime in the Play 4 the Cure tournament at Cary Academy.
Chapel Hill has been in three consecutive state finals since winning the 2007 championship.
No. 4 East Chapel Hill (16-2) and No. 5 Carrboro (16-3) will meet for the third time when they play at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Wildcat Stadium. They split their regular-season matches this year, each winning on their home field.
Carrboro defeated East Chapel Hill for the first time ever with a 1-0 decision on Sept. 28. One week later, East Chapel Hill avenged that loss with a 3-2, double-OT win at Wildcat Stadium.
The winners from Tuesday's matches at West Forsyth and East Chapel Hill will meet in the state semifinals, Friday at Greensboro Day School. The tournament ends Saturday at GDS, with the N.C. high school third-place game at 1 p.m. and the championship match at 3 p.m.
West Forsyth had a first-round bye to start the tournament. CHHS has had a long break since it shut out No. 9 Asheville 2-0 in the opening round Oct. 25.
Carrboro eliminated No. 12 seed Mt. Tabor in its first-round match Oct. 28. Neela Mahanty had two goals and two assists in the win. Katie Wilson, Katie Minogue and Maddie Smith each scored one goal.
Starting off in pursuit of a fourth straight state championship, East Chapel Hill defeated 13th-seeded Reagan 5-0 last Tuesday in the first round of the playoffs. East so dominated the Raiders, the 'Cats had 16 penalty corners to zero for Reagan. Sydney Holman scored twice, while Margo Richardson, Bailey DeMuth and Julie Canon each had one goal. Marissa Creatore, Amanda DeMasi and Fiona Nelson each assisted on one goal.
All-star games set for Nov. 13 in CharlotteCarrboro, Chapel Hill and East Chapel Hill will be well represented at the second annual North Carolina All-Star Field Hockey Games, planned for Nov. 13 at Charlotte Providence Day School.
The matches features top players from the N.C. Field Hockey Association for public schools and the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association.
Teams will be fielded for NCISAA seniors, NCFHA seniors and combined underclass players from both the NCISSA and NCFHA. The three teams will meet in a round-robin series of matches.
Defending state champion East Chapel Hill led the selections with five players in the 53-player field: senior Julie Canon in her second all-star year; senior Margo Richardson; juniors Rebecca Halter and Sydney Holman; and senior Emily Shermanski as an alternate.
Carrboro also had four first-team selections: senior Neela Mahanty and sophomore Katie Wilson as repeat all-stars, plus senior Claire Scott and sophomore Alex Grant.
Chapel Hill placed three on the all-star team, led by senior Jessica Barfield as a repeat selection. She'll be joined by senior Julie Cui and junior Emma Williams.
Durham Academy has three players on the NCISSA team: senior Lauren Rogers, a 2010 choice; junior Robin Blazing and ninth-grader Jordan Barry.
