CHAPEL HILL - The man found dead Saturday in Bolin Creek was a 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper.

Sgt. Shane Scott Pease, of A2652 Bigler St. at Fort Bragg, was discovered by a jogger around 9 a.m., lying in the creek just north of the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Hillsborough Street.

Pease, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It's still not clear how Pease died, according to Chapel Hill police.

Pease, of Decatur, Mich., joined the Army in 2006 and deployed to Iraq twice with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was an infantryman in Company A, 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

"Sgt. Pease is a lifetime member of Alpha Company having served two combat tours with (Alpha Company)," said Cpt. Michael Orloff, commander of Company A. "With his hard work, education, and loyalty to those with whom he served, he epitomized he word Paratrooper."
