CHAPEL HILL -
Playing in Tuesday night's first game at Wildcat Gym, the Carrboro and East Chapel Hill girls' varsities provided a mirror image of Carrboro's win in the nightcap.
Adrienne Davis scored 16 points and ninth-grader Sarah Townes added 12 points as East Chapel Hill (1-0) rallied from an early deficit to win 51-41 over Carrboro's girls team.
The Jaguars fell to 0-1 despite a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds from Diamond Tyson, Carrboro's lone three-year player in its young lineup. The Wildcats are about as young, with one returning player - senior Ally Mack .
"Everyone was nervous in the locker room before the game," East coach Michelle Wood said. "I'm proud of how they retained their composure when we got down early."
Led by Tyson's excellent shooting, Carrboro (0-1) scored the first six points of the second quarter to go up 17-7. The Jaguars were still up 26-22 after two more baskets by Tyson early in the third quarter. East answered with a 9-0 run, sparked by four points from Davis and capped by a free throw by Davis that put the Wildcats back in front 31-26 with 3:06 left in the third.
The Jaguars committed 8 turnovers and made just 2 of 11 shots from the field over the game's last 10:01. Meanwhile, East made 11 of its last 17 shots and scored the game's last six points to break open what had been a 45-41 game after Tyson's last points with 2:23 left.
"We didn't move well on defense," Carrboro coach Sheremy Dillard-Clayton said. "We need to move our feet on defense, and we've got to finish shots; we didn't finish."
Seven different Wildcats scored, including 6 points apiece from sophomore backcourt starters Riley Foster and Emily Kupec. Mack added 5, Jasmine Shelton 4 an Christine Beverly 2.
"We were a little tentative shooting at first, but it was just the first game," Wood said.
