CHHS alumni run Saturday

The seventh annual CHHS XC Alumni 5k Run/Walk will start at 11 a.m. Saturday near Chapel Hill High School's track. All former cross-country runners, family and friends are invited.

The event includes a Munchkin Ramble for up-and-coming runners, a raffle for prizes, and food following the run.

Race registration is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Money will benefit the Chapel Hill cross-country team.

Runners are encouraged to wear their favorite CHHS T-shirt, and commemorative XC Alumni Run high tech synthetic T-shirts also will be available. They cost $15 for adults and $10 for children.

Tiger basketball enters top 10

Chapel Hill's boys basketball team (8-0) was ranked No. 9 in the state's 3A classification this week by maxpreps.com as the Tigers prepared for Monday's game at No. 1-ranked Western Alamance (7-0). See newsobserver.com/sports for results of that matchup.

Changes in shuttle service

Chapel Hill Transit's Tar Heel Express shuttles will not run from the University Mall park-and-ride lots for UNC's basketball game tonight with Texas.

The shuttles will operate as regularly scheduled from the park-and-rides located at Friday Center, Southern Village and Jones Ferry Rd. Shuttles will also be available from the Carolina Coffee Shop located at 138 E. Franklin Street. Shuttle rides are $5 for a round-trip or $3 for a one-way trip. Rides from the Carolina Coffee Shop are $2 one-way or $4 round-trip.

Tar Heel Express service from the University Mall will resume for the Dec. 29 men's basketball game with Elon.

It's never too early for baseball

The Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department will host youth and middle-school baseball leagues this spring.

Registration will begin Jan. 4 for Carrboro residents and Jan. 5 for others. Kids can be signed up online through an existing registration account or at the Recreation Department offices at 100 N. Greensboro St. in Carrboro.

The Spring Baseball League will be for ages 6-12 years old (as of Aug. 31, 2011), and the Middle School Baseball League will be for ages 13-14.

The fee is $58 for Orange County residents, $95 for out-of-county residents. For more information, call 918-7364.
