Rebecca (Becky) Harden Bradley of 100 Madera Lane Chapel Hill, North Carolina, died Sunday, December, 18 following a short illness. She is survived by her husband Michael, her sister Eleanor Smith of Towanda Pennsylvania, her brother Dr. Burt Harden of Raleigh North Carolina, her sister-in-law Darla Johnson of Princeton Idaho, two nephews and four nieces. Becky was born in Towanda Pennsylvania on August 18, 1949, the daughter of Paul and Maxine Harden. She attended Towanda area schools where she was a cheerleader and Homecoming Queen. After graduation she attended Southern Seminary College in Virginia and was graduated from Elmira College.
Becky was instrumental in creating the Bradford County Day Care Center in her hometown, which was a precursor to the Head Start Program, in 1969. On March 27, 1971 she married Michael Bradley and together they set off into the world of academics first at the University of Chicago where Becky worked at Arthur Anderson while Michael earned his Doctorate in Economics, later at the University of Rochester, then at the University of Michigan and eventually settling at Duke University in 1995. Becky always found places that needed her help whether with children as a CASA volunteer or later as an advocate for the elderly. She received numerous commendations for her work with the Head Start Program of Chapel Hill, a member and Chair of the Orange County Nursing Home Advisory Committee and volunteer at Charles House – an adult daycare facility in Carrboro NC. Becky loved sports and remained a Michigan football fan, and became an avid Duke basketball fan. She loved traveling with Michael, especially trips to her hometown and spending summers in their home in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Services will be private. Memorials should be sent in her name to Charles House Association, 109 Hillcrest Avenue, Carrboro, NC 27510-1415.
