Charlotte Emory Sigmon Mrs. Charlotte Emory Sigmon, age 84, died early Thursday morning, December 22nd, 2011, at the Hock Family Pavillion.
Born August 25, 1927 in Durham, Charlotte was the daughter of the late John Henry and Ethel Mae Thomas Emory. She attended Durham City schools, graduating from Durham High School. In 1972 she entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she graduated with honors. Over the course of her remarkable life, Charlotte was employed at Christian Printing Company, served as an announcer for a classical music radio station and worked for the Dean at Duke University and for Air Force Counter-Intelligence in Washington, D.C. She also reviewed books for the Chapel Hill newspaper. Her favorite and most meaningful occupation was that of full-time homemaker, as caring for her family was an essential part of her life. She was a superb wife, mother, and grandmother. Outside of her home life, Charlotte dedicated much of her seemingly boundless energy to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, of which she had been an active member since 1970. Her offerings were many and varied: she served as a Sunday school teacher, as a Vestry member, as a member and chairperson on the Altar Guild, as a member of the “Women of the Church” and as a member of the Hospital Callers group. In between those commitments, she found time to arrange flowers for the church, compose newsletters, and serve on the board of the St. Stephen’s (now Triangle) Orchestra.
Surviving are her husband of 57 years, E. Bruce Sigmon, Jr., PhD., Lt. Col. United States Marine Corps (Ret.), her daughter, Stephanie Anne Sigmon Christensen, of Charleston, SC; three sons, John Alexander Sigmon of Tacoma, Washington, Emmett Bruce (Skip) Sigmon, III and wife Dr. Jane Sigmon of Alexandria, Virginia, and Command Chief Master Sgt. Thomas Andrew Sigmon (USAF) and wife Karen Sigmon of Gig Harbor, Washington; two granddaughters, Dr. Claire Christensen and Bonnie Beth Sigmon Beal; two grandsons, Richard Sigmon and Robert Sigmon; three great-grandchildren; her brother, Dan Emory and wife Frances of Garner; and her sister-in-law, Clarita Emory of Durham.
A memorial service was conducted Tuesday, December 27th at 11:00 AM in St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Reverend Robert Kaynor officiating. Inurnment will be in the church Memorial Garden. The family received friends in the church parish hall following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Animal Protection Society, 2117 East Club Boulevard, Durham, North Carolina 27704. Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home is assisting the Sigmon family.
