CONNOR ROACH

Senior, Carrboro High School

Honors: N.C. Soccer Coaches Association all-state team, All-East Region, National Soccer Coaches of America Association Scholar All-American. Roach spent last weekend in Kansas City, receiving recognition from the NSCAA.

You already were an all-conference soccer player. Why play football? "My dad and I talked about it last year. Then I talked about it with some soccer players. They only did it for a while the past two seasons. They had quit because they didn't like it, but it was something I always wanted to do. I approached Coach T (Jason Tudryn) to talk about helping, and I ended up being half-decent at it."

Stats? Football: longest field goal -- 38 yards (a school record) versus East Chapel Hill. Kicked more than 30 PATs. Soccer: 2010 -- 17 goals. 2011 -- 10 assists and 17 goals, including 6 goals in the playoffs.

Your college choice, and why? Washington University in St. Louis. "Because of the strong academics and athletics. It provides me an opportunity to play an get a great education at the same time."

Planned major: "Definitely looking at business. Getting into Olin School of Business, no way you can pass that up."

What was your favorite sports moment at Carrboro High? Winning against East Duplin in the playoffs. (Roach scored to send the game into OT, and then assisted on the game-winner, avenging a 2010 playoff loss to East Duplin.) "It was like redemption. It was the exact same place in the playoffs. It was great beating them. ... I'll remember that as long as I live."

What's your favorite sports memory, period? Landon Donovan's goal in the 91st minute vs. Algeria, advancing the USA to the 2010 World Cup's round of 16.

What was best about turning 18 -- being able to vote in 2012 or getting a driver's license? "Diver's license, definitely. It's a privilege, not a right."

How's your senior year? "It was a stressful year for my parents. I had so much to do, and in the end it all pays off. Everything is going so fast now. My senior soccer season just flew by. There was always something happening, every week, and now all of a sudden I'm done. I definitely wish I was still playing."

What's your favorite sport -- football or soccer? "Soccer. All the way."
