Mock gets ACC wrestling honor

Former CHHS state champion Corey Mock, now wrestling at 157 pounds for the University of North Carolina, has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after posting a 3-0 record in last weekend's Virginia Duals at Hampton, Va.

Mock's pin of Rider's Jimmy Morris in 2:48 keyed the Tar Heels to an 18-15 team win over Rider in their opening match of the event. Mock followed with an 11-1 major decision over Casey Fuller of ninth-ranked Edinboro and then scored a hard-fought 1-0 win over The Citadel's Pierre Frazile.

Mock improved to 20-8 on the year and continues to be ranked No. 19 in his weight class nationally.

The Tar Heels are back in Virginia this weekend for duals against Virginia and No. 15 Virginia Tech.

Former Chapel Hill Tiger Marie Pesacreta won the 200-Yard Individual Medley last Monday to help the UNC women's swim team defeat Clemson 183-104 in Koury Natatorium. The UNC men won 178-118.

Pesacreta, who finished eighth in the 200 IM in last year's ACC championships, won Monday with a time of 2:06.04.

Both Carolina teams improved to 5-1 overall and to 4-0 in the ACC heading into Saturday's showdown with Virginia at Koury Natatorium. (See newsobserver.com for Saturday's results.)

'Death' Racers push limits

First came the marathon, then the Iron Man Triathlon, then Ultras. Now comes the outright threat of the "Spartan Death Race" from www.YouMayDie.com.

Death? Really?

Ron Snyder, 26, of Chapel Hill is listed by organizers as one of the 200 registered athletes currently training for the 2012 Death Race.

Held annually since 2005 in the small town of Pittsfield, Vt., the 2012 Death Race, scheduled for June 15, requires competitors to complete a series of grueling mental and physical challenges throughout a 40-mile course that runs through the Vermont woods. Competitors may be asked to chop wood for two hours, carry a 20-pound stump, build a fire, cut a bushel of onions, crawl through mud under barbed wire or, after 15-hours of racing, memorize the names of the first 10 U.S. Presidents or a Bible verse, hike to the top of a mountain and recite them back in order. The course map and list of challenges are kept secret from entrants, and the race can run 24-48 hours.
