Michael Macauley, a former resident of Chapel Hill, died peacefully Jan. 6 at his home in Redding CT Mr. Macauley was 90 and had lived in Chapel Hill from 1981 until 2009. He was pre-deceased by his wife Barbara in 2010.
Born April 21, 1921 in Honolulu, Mr. Macauley was the youngest of five children of Capt. Edward Macauley Jr., a distinguished U.S. naval officer, and Jean Oliver Macauley, daughter of United States Senator George T. Oliver of Pennsylvania. The family relocated frequently, but Mr. Macauley was raised primarily in Hillsborough, CA and Geneva, Switzerland.
Mr. Macauley was a decorated World War II veteran, serving in the US Army from March 1943 through January 1946, and was awarded the Purple Heart for leg injuries suffered in France.
Mr. Macauley is survived by sons Michael P. of Flagstaff AZ, and Jack of Wilton CT, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery adjacent to his parents. In lieu of flowers, voluntary donations in memory of Mr. Macauley should be sent c/o Trinity School for Ministry, 311 Eleventh Street, Ambridge PA 15003.
