CARRBORO - The Board of Aldermen approved a conditional-use permit Tuesday but attached one stipulation to the planned expansion at the Looking Glass Cafe.

In a nod to neighbor concerns, the aldermen asked business owners Carolyn Griggs and Susan Manring to limit amplified music at the 601 W. Main St. coffee shop to six special events a year.

The 1,495-square-foot restaurant opened in 2009 and will expand to 3,370 square feet by taking over an adjoining business, formerly the Cycle 9 bike shop. The additional space will be used for more indoor and outdoor customer seating.

The project requires a conditional use permit, because the property's current zoning only allows a business of up to 1,500 square feet. No changes to the building are planned. However, Carrboro West Partners LLC, which owns the building, will improve the parking lot by paving at two entrances on West Poplar Avenue and marking the 42 existing spaces.

The town's requirement that a business of that size have 60 parking spaces was waived because of the lot's current size and two bicycle racks. Alderman Sammy Slade also suggested the developers look at adding at least one more tree to the parking lot for shade.

Town officials are asking residents and business owners to help celebrate the community's spirit as part of "For the Love of Carrboro" in February.

The month-long celebration is aimed at continuing the buzz generated by Carrboro's recent campaign to become "Love Town USA." The town was a runner-up for the BBC America show, scheduled to air on the Oprah Winfrey Network later this year.

Annette Stone, director of the town's Community and Economic Development office, said the celebration will include special events and deals.

The kickoff event will be "The Dating Game" at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at The Station, 201-C E. Main St.
