Kathryn Reynolds Bream, aged 97, died peacefully in the company of family at her home in Chapel Hill, NC on January 15, 2012. Kathryn, known as Kay to many, was born on March 29, 1914, to Caroline and Arthur Reynolds of McKeesport, PA and grew up in Midland, PA with eight siblings. She often told stories of her childhood experiences as part of a large family in this steel mill town. She graduated from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA and fondly remembers helping immigrant children of many nationalities not only learn their school lessons, but how to get along together. After six years of teaching second grade at the Seventh Street School in Midland she married Dr. Charles Anthony Bream of Midland in July of 1941.

The Bream Family arrived in Chapel Hill with four children in the summer of 1952 where Dr. Bream was a founding faculty member of the Radiology Department at UNC Hospital. Kay served for many years as a dedicated volunteer with the UNC Hospital Auxiliary. She also traveled extensively, was an avid gardener and took pleasure working in her gardens as well as visiting gardens throughout the US and England. She was a long time member of the Laurel Hill Garden Club and The University Woman's Club of UNC and used her knowledge of herbs to help establish the first Herb Garden at the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Bream was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Charles Bream. Survivors include: sister Elizabeth R. (Jack) Keefe of Litchfield Beach, SC; four sons, Tony (Debbie) of Charlotte; Peter (Lynn) of Jacksonville, FL; Alan (Terri) of Charlottesville, VA; William (Destria) of Wake Forest, NC; 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

At Mrs. Bream’s request, services and burial will be private for family members. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the NC Botanical Garden, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Campus Box 3375, Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27599-3375 or to the Charles A. and Kathryn R. Bream Residency Fund, Department of Radiology, Chairman's Office, 2006 Old Clinic, CB# 7510, Chapel Hill, NC 27599
