Tigers, Panthers meet for titleChapel Hill and Orange are setting up for major showdown in Carolina-6 wrestling tonight in Hillsborough. Both teams are 4-0 in conference dual matches, so tonight's 6:30 meeting is the de facto conference championship.
Chapel Hill is coming off a 3-0 performance at the Carolina 6 Duals last Friday, when CHHS (19-6) won 60-12 over Northern Vance, 69-12 on top of Webb and 64-6 against Southern Vance.
Eleven Tigers went undefeated for the weekend -- Aaron Feinberg (106 pounds), David Bobeck (120, 126), Stephen Dreher (120, 126), Timofey Karginov (132), Peter Dreher (138), Ethan Martin (152), Joe Carter (145), Roscoe Burnette (160), Roberts Nelson (170), Andrew Hotong (182) and Arthur Colson (220, 285).
Martin and Nelson both won two bouts by pins and one by forfeit. Nelson triumphed in one of the day's toughest matches, pinning Northen Vance's Patrick Richardson at the 4:54 mark.
Middle school championshipsPhillips will host the championship games of the OPAC southern division basketball tournament today and Thursday.Play began Monday with the girls' semifinals and Tuesday with the boys' semifinals.
The girls' winners from the Culbreth-Smith and Phillips-McDougle matchups will play at 5:45 p.m. today at Falcons Gym for the championship. That's preceded by the consolation game at 4:30 p.m.
The boys' championship will be Thursday at 5:45 p.m. That will feature the Culbreth-McDougle winner versus the winner of Phillips-Smith. The boys' consolation game will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Northwood to host CarrboroCarrboro bounced back from a tough 62-61 loss last week to Cedar Ridge by blowing out South Granville, 94-64, last Friday. James Scott led the scoring with a game-high 22 points, and Keenan van Name made 8-of-10 shots from the field to add 18 as the Jaguars hit their season high for points. Tykeem Woodard chipped in 13, helping Carrboro stay within two games of league leader Northwood.
Carrboro (13-6, 10-2) heads to Pittsboro tonight for a Carolina-12 showdown with Northwood (14-6, 11-0). They'll play at approximately 7:30 p.m., following the girls game.
The Northwood girls (17-3, 11-1), ranked No. 11 by the News & Observer, host Carrboro (11-8, 8-4) at 6 p.m.
Elsewhere this week, Chapel Hill puts its No. 1 ranking on the line at Webb (which has UNC recruit Isaiah Hicks) in a Carolina 3A game at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Oxford.The No.7-ranked Chapel Hill girls will host their Webb counterparts at 7:30 p.m. at CHHS.
More honors for WahrenbrockSaint Michael's College field hockey senior Taylor Wahrenbrock, an alumna of the Chapel Hill High field hockey championship program, has been selected for the Northeast-10 Conference Academic All-Conference fall semester honor roll.
She started all 18 games this season, contributing two goals and four assists. Each of her points came on goals that either gave her team the lead or tied the score, including assisting the overtime game-winner against Adelphi University on Oct. 9. During her career, the midfielder appeared in 68 of a possible 73 games, starting the last 54.
Wahrenbrock, who has qualified for the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll four times due to academic excellence, was selected to play in November's National Field Hockey Coaches Association North/South Senior Game after landing on the NE-10 All-Conference second team.
Lakers win seventh straightThe Carrboro Lakers defeated the Warriors, 25-8, last Saturday to improve to 7-0 and remain the only undefeated team in Carrboro Recreation youth basketball. The Celtics (6-1) stayed one game back of the Mite League leaders by winning 23-3 over the Blazers.
In Carrboro's Junior League, the Jayhawks (6-2) won their third straight, 35-31 Thursday against the Bruins, to move within a half-game of the Yellow Jackets (6-1), who were off last week.
The Pee Wee League remains jammed at the top, with four teams at 4-0 -- the Suns, Hornets, Thunder and Nets -- after each of them won last Saturday. The Rockets defeated the Knicks to leave both teams at 3-2.
In the Midget League, the Demon Deacons (7-1) defeated the Seahawks 38-15 last Saturday to stay one-half game in front of the (7-2) Blue Devils.
