North Carolina NAACP President the Rev. William J. Barber II will join UNC system students for a news conference and rally at 5 p.m. today, Feb. 1, on the steps of South Building on the UNC campus.

Participants will speak out against tuition increases and demanding accountability from the Board of Governors and State Legislature.

"The State Constitution declares that the UNC system should 'as far as practicable, be extended to the people of the State free of expense'. Proposed tuition increases for the UNC system stands in direct contradiction of this mission," says UNC student La'Naeschia O'Rear, "It's time for students to speak up, raise our voices and demand that education is accessible and affordable for all."

"The NAACP has stood for equal access to education since its inception 103 years ago," said UNC NAACP President Amanda Ellis. "Our state president Dr. Barber is a leading civil rights voice in North Carolina, whether it is fighting resegregation in Wake County or leading a diverse and anti-racist coalition against the destructive budget passed by extreme rightwing legislators in the General Assembly."

The press conference and rally is sponsored by UNC NAACP, Education Justice Alliance, Campus Y, UNC Student Action with Workers, UNC Students for a Democratic Society, NC Defend Education, and Feminist Students United.
