The Orange County Board of Commissioners appointed the following volunteers to county advisory boards and commissions:
Andrea Riley, Orange County Arts commission;
Jane Cousins, Orange County Emergency Services Work Group;
Mary Parrish, Orange County Emergency Services Work Group;
Ashley Tittemore, Human Relations Commission; and
Mary Ann Peter, Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee.
Portraits of the fourth group of Town Treasures will be permanently hung in the Seymour Center during a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Feb. 8. Town Treasures are outstanding seniors who have guided, ministered to, taught and documented Chapel Hill-Carrboro history.

Catharine Carter has photographed all of our Town Treasures since recognition began in 2008. Each portrait captures a Town Treasure at home or at a location that reflects his or her contributions to our community. Each photograph includes a written reflection by the Town Treasure on Chapel Hill's past and future. These black and white photographs are displayed in the theater at the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Ave. in Chapel Hill.

Nine-year-old
Kristin Lewis has been awarded the Presidential Volunteer Service Gold Award for volunteering 100 hours in a 12-month period. Lewis volunteered for many different organizations around town, including Karl's Books, Kidzu Children's Museum, Meals on Wheels, SECU Family House, Ronald McDonald House, PORCH, and Orange County Animal Services. She also spent time helping organizations with a broader geographical reach, including A Ban Against Neglect (Ghana), Project Sierra Leone, Nothing But Nets (malaria), and soles4souls (shoes for the world's poor). Lewis did some of her volunteer work through her Girl Scout Troop and her 4-H club.
Bernadette Pelissier, chair of the Orange County Board of Commissioners was recognized by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce on Jan. 24. Pelissier received the "The 2011 Chair's Award for Public-Private Partnership" at the chamber's annual meeting.
Ragsdale Liggett PLLC has announced that
Melissa Dewey Brumback, partner at the law firm, was appointed chair of the 10th Judicial District Grievance Committee, after serving on the committee for three years and as vice-chair in 2011.
Brumback serves as president on the board of directors for R.L. Mace Universal Design Institute in Chapel Hill, where she has been a board member for four years. She has earned the LEED Green Associate accreditation by the Green Building Certification Institute. She earned her bachelor's degree with honors and highest distinction and a Juris Doctor from UNC-Chapel Hill.
