Blending old-time Appalachian string music with hip-hop sounds crazy - but in the hands of Justin Robinson, late of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, it might just be crazy enough to work. Robinson and his new band, the Mary Annettes, will play in support of their new CD "Bones for Tinder" at Local 506 on Friday.

Meanwhile, Robinson's former band, the superb Carolina Chocolate Drops, share the stage with the New York gypsy punk outfit Luminescent Orchestrii at Memorial Hall Friday night. Should be a show to remember. 919-843-3333, carolinaperformingarts.org.

The Preservation Society of Chapel Hill will open "Recollections: Trees, Sea and Me," an exhibition of works by Francis Katz, with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Horace Williams House, 610 E. Rosemary St. The show will remain up through Feb. 25. 919-942-7818, chapelhillpreservation.com.
