Still No. 1, Tigers take on Oxford

Chapel Hill's undefeated boys basketball team remained at No. 1 in the News & Observer's rankings of the Triangle's top teams, while the CHHS girls moved up three spaces to No. 4.

Tod Morgan's boys team, at 21-0 after Tuesday's 75-49 victory at Northern Vance, still needed a win Friday at Oxford Webb (14-3, 6-1) to clinch the Carolina-6's top playoff spot. The Warriors, surging since the return of UNC signee Isaiah Hicks, broke into the N&O rankings for the first time this season at No. 9 last week.

CHHS girls moving up

Winning its seventh straight last week with a victory over Northern Vance, Chapel Hill (19-2) moved up three spaces to stand No. 4 in the rankings, while Durham Hillside (15-2) was the top team from the PAC-6 , at No. 3 last week, in the

Southern Durham (16-3), which fell to both Hillside and Riverside within the past two weeks, dropped two spots to No. 7.

Carolina Friends School (20-3) was at No. 9, and it was still the lone private school in the N&O rankings.

Northwood (18-3), winner of nine in its last 10 games, moved up a spot to No. 10.

Tuesday at Northern Vance, coach Sherry Norris's Tigers used balanced scoring to dispatch the Vikings, 68-52. Jamella Smith of CHHS hit 3-of-5 tries on 3-pointers for a team-high 19 points to go with nine rebounds. Jessica Wall and Catherine Romaine each had 12 points. Laura Musalem helped CHHS on the boards with a game-high 10 rebounds.
