Price to speak

U.S. Rep. David Price, D-4th Dist., will share remarks with Durham and Chapel Hill clergy at a CROP Hunger Walk kick-off breakfast Thursday, Feb. 23.

The breakfast, a thank you to area clergy for their support of the annual CROP Walks, will be held at 9 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3639 Old Chapel Hill Road, Durham.

Price's remarks are titled "Hunger-Fighting: The Hallmark of a Caring Community."

The Durham and Chapel Hill/Carrboro CROP Hunger Walks have raised between $4 million and $5 million for local and global hunger needs in the past 30 years, said Joe Moran of Church World Service.

Clergy who plan to attend are asked to RSVP to jmoran@churchworldservice.org or call Joe Moran at Church World Service at 919-688-3843.

The Chapel Hill/Carrboro walk is Sunday, March 25, and the Durham walk is Sunday, April 1.

Classes for bereaved

The Chapel Hill Kehillah Synagogue and Jewish Family Services of Durham-Chapel Hill are offering eight sessions, beginning Sunday, Feb. 19, and continuing through Sunday, April 8, designed for members of the synagogue and the community who have recently lost a loved one.

Wallace Mandell will lead the sessions from 10 to 11:30 a.m. each Sunday. He received training in psychology at the City College of New York, Yale University and in 1954 earned a Ph.D. From New York University. In 1968, he was appointed professor of mental health at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health where he directed the hospital's alcoholism treatment programs.

Participants are asked to make a donation of $18 for the eight sessions. Donations will go to services that support the bereaved. Registration is required as the group size is limited. Call 942-8914 or email stephanie@chkehillah.org.

Classes will be held at the Kehillah Synagogue, 1200 Mason Farm Road.

Meditation Workshop

The Chapel Hill Zen Center will have a Zen meditation workshop on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 9:30 a.m. to noon led by Josho Sensei.

The practice of Zen meditation includes the understanding of the interrelationship of body, breath and mind through being present with the immediate experience. Instruction will include awareness of the breath and how to practice with the mind, with individual attention given to finding a position that works for you whether you sit on a cushion, a meditation bench or a chair, as well as how to do walking meditation.

This workshop is for beginners and anyone else wanting to review their meditation practice or wanting help with their sitting position.

A donation of $20, $10 for students, is suggested. Register by calling 919-967-0861 or email to pphelan@nc.rr.com.

The Zen Center is located at 5322 N.C. Hwy. 86.

Church to open closet

The Take and Wear Clothes Closet, located at Lystra Baptist Church, will be open Saturday, Feb. 18, from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Anyone needing clothes is welcome to come. There is no advantage to arriving before 8:45 a.m. because numbers will be drawn to determine the order in which people can shop.

Each family can get two bags of clothes. Everything is free.

The church is located at 686 Lystra Road, off U.S. 15-501. Call 919-933-6812 for further information.

Churches to worship

Sister churches, Binkley Baptist and Barbee Chapel, will worship together at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at Binkley, 1712 Willow Drive.

The joint service, an annual event, will feature a sermon by Barbee's pastor Bishop Gene Hatley and the Barbee choir will provide music for the service. Binkley visits Barbee in October.

Lunch will be served at noon at which Barbee Chapel members will be guests of the Binkley congregation.

In addition to this joint worship held every year, the two churches also sponsor a gigantic yard sale every other year that has become an anticipated event in town. The tentative date is Aug. 18.

In past years, the sale has grossed as much as $40,000. The proceeds from the 2010 sale went to build a Habitat house locally and to a health and education program in Haiti.

Shrove Tuesday supper

St. Benedict's Anglican Church, 870 Weaver Dairy Road, will host its annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper on Feb. 21, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

The next day, Ash Wednesday, is the beginning of the season of Lent in the Christian church. In spirit, Ash Wednesday is somewhat like the Jewish High Holy Day Yom Kippur in that it involves fasting and serious repentance with a firm belief in reconciliation.

At. St. Benedict's, Ash Wednesday services will take place at noon and at 7 p.m. and will include Holy Communion with imposition of ashes.

Binkley Youth plan show

Binkley Baptist, 1712 Willow Drive, will mark Shrove Tuesday with a pancake supper, beginning at 5:45 p.m. and followed by a talent show. Both the supper and the show are coordinated by Binkley Youth.

Two types of services in which participants may worship and receive ashes on the hand or forehead will be offered at the church on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, the first day of the Lenten season in the church calendar.

The first type is an intimate gathering of two families at a time scheduled in 15-minute segments beginning at 6 p.m. Dale Osborne will lead the children and parents in a time of dialogue, song and prayer as well as give an explanation of the use of ashes as a symbol. This will take place in the chapel.

At second opportunity for a more formal service of ashes will be held in the sanctuary at 7:30 p.m. Pastor Peter Carman and the Chancel Choir will lead the service.

Singing, Scripture readings, prayer, special music and the imposition of ashes are part of the gathering to which all are invited.
