Jamella Smith scored 19 points last Friday night for Chapel Hill High School's No. 1-seeded girls team to pace the Tigers to a 74-40 win over No. 3 seed Southern Vance in the finals of the Carolina-6 Conference basketball tournament.

Playing in the night's first game of the Carolina-6 finals in Tiger Gym, Smith scored 15 points in the first half, leading Chapel Hill to a 44-13 margin at the break.

The Tigers held Southern Vance to just two baskets over a span of 7:04 in the first half and used a 29-4 spurt to go up 40-8. Southern Vance never again got closer than 57-20 in the second half.

Lila Scott had 13 points for Chapel Hill, while Laura Musalem and Catherine Romaine chipped in 10 apiece. Frustrated by a CHHS defense that choked off her repeated drives into the lane, Breona Jones still managed to get 15 points to lead Southern Vance (18-7).

"This feels great," said Romaine. "It shows how far we've come since the past two seasons (1-15 in 2009, 13-12 in 2010.) Winning the regular season title and then the conference tournament is just a great way to end the season."

Chapel Hill (24-2), seeded No. 1 in its regional pod, enters the NCHSAA tournament Monday with a home game at 6 p.m. against No. 16 Seed Eastern Guilford (15-12). That's followed by a 7:30 p.m. boys game between No. 1 Chapel Hill (25-1) vs. No. 16 Seed Southern Guilford (8-17).
