Wynton Marsalis, the first jazz composer to win the Pulitzer Prize in music, leads the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in a concert at Memorial Hall on the UNC campus Thursday night. Prior to the show, Jim Ketch, director of jazz studies at UNC, will give a talk (location TBA) about listening to a jazz orchestra’s various components in general, and about the Jazz at Lincon Center Orchestra in particular. 919-843-3333, carolinaperformingarts.org.

The story goes that an unnamed British band playing its first gig in 1996 put a sign outside the club reading “Gomez in here,” to direct a friend by that name to the right venue. Everybody else assumed that was the name of the band. They figured, OK, so be it. Now Gomez is an acclaimed platinum-selling indie rock outfit (they’re among Paste magazine’s 50 all-time greatest British acts). They’ll play the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro Thursday night. 967-9053, catscradle.com.

The Ackland Art Museum on the UNC campus closes out its “The Spectacular of Vernacular” exhibit Sunday with a panel discussion at 2 p.m. in the Hanes Art Center auditorium and a special Music in the Galleries Series concert, “Fracking Music!: Part 2” from 1 to 5 p.m. in the museum. Musical artist MGL will debut the second part of his new composition, which uses sounds recorded in the galleries during the run of “The Spectacular of Vernacular.” ackland.org
