• Police and firefighters responded March 13 to a fire at the Triem Electric Motors building on Rand Road, south of downtown. Someone broke into the building and a structure fire was reported to emergency operators around 3:53 p.m. Officers found flames coming from one building. No additional details were available.

Chapel Hill

• Two Chapel Hill Fire Department fire engines, one ladder truck, two command vehicles and 12 personnel responded around 12:36 a.m. March 14 to an automatic fire alarm at the Dobbins Hills Apartments, 1749 Dobbins Drive.

Firefighters found a pot of oil outside a second-floor apartment that had melted the siding on Building A, setting off the alarm and activating a breezeway sprinkler, a news release stated. The fire was determined to be accidental and the property damage was minimal, fire officials said.

The release also highlighted the importance of using a fire extinguisher to put out small fires or leaving the building and calling 911 if that is not possible. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 43 percent of stove fires start with cooking oil, and 55 percent of people who are injured tried to fight the fire instead of getting out.

• Seven Chapel Hill Fire Department vehicles and 22 firefighters also responded to a structure fire around 6:16 a.m. March 13 at a 416 Ridgefield Road home.

The home’s occupants were able to get out before firefighters arrive and were taken to UNC Hospitals for evaluation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Chapel Hill Police Department and South Orange Rescue Squad personnel also responded to the fire.

• Montez Fitzgerald Smith, 25, of 1901 Fountain Ridge Road, was charged March 15 with felony breaking and entering, felony possession of stolen goods and failure to appear, police reported.

• Marques Jamaal DeGraffenreid, 22, of 3206 Rockford Road, Durham, was charged March 15 with felony breaking and entering and felony possession of stolen goods, police reported.

• Breon Dayshawn Waller, 24, of 3506 Chewning Road, Oxford, was charged March 15 with felony breaking and entering and felony possession of stolen goods, police reported.

• Tara Michelle Brown, 34, of 800 Pritchard Ave. Ext., Apt. C4, was charged March 14 with felony breaking and entering to a vehicle, police reported.

Chatham County

• Brian Pope, 37, of 118 Seminole Point, Siler City, was charged March 12 with manufacturing marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, sheriff’s deputies reported.

• Jonathan Overacre, 29, of 1535 Hwy. 42, Goldston, was charged March 6 with a true bill of indictment, sheriff’s deputies reported.

• George Moore, 40, of 77 E. Goldbar Ave., Goldston, was charged March 7 with possession of stolen goods and possessing and receiving stolen goods, sheriff’s deputies reported.

• Stephen Brower, 31 of 204 Cooper Road, Staley, was charged March 8 with larceny and possession of stolen goods, sheriff’s deputies reported.
