Ingram named player of the year, again

Chapel Hill basketball’s Denzel Ingram pick up another honor last week: being named N.C. Player of the Year by CarolinaPreps.com.

Ingram, a repeat all-conference, all-district and all-state player, earlier this month was named 3A Basketball Player Of The Year last week by NCPreps.com.

CarolinaPreps.com N.C.-S.C. All-Star Game in Myrtle Beach and the Jordan Brand Classic Regional All-Star Game in Charlotte.

Ingram is joined on the CarolinaPreps all-state team by Allerik Freeman of Charlotte Olympic, Kennedy Meeks of West Charlotte, New Hanover’s Kadeem Allen and Jarvis Haywood of Charlotte Harding.

Five straight for CHHS lacrosse

Paul Miller scored three goals and Paul Whitford tallied three assists in addition to his goal to pace Chapel Hill to its fifth straight win in NCHSAA lacrosse, an 8-7 squeaker Friday over Carrboro.

Stephen Winsor added two goals, while Tim Duffy and Hank Bolon each had one, and Tommy Voelkel notched an assist. Corey Silfen made five saves in the crease during the win, which kept CHHS (5-1, 4-0) undefeated in conference play and nudged the Tigers a half-game in front of East Chapel Hill (5-3, 4-1).

It was the second straight one-goal loss for Carrboro, which fell to East Chapel Hill, 12-11, last week.

CHHS peppered Carrboro’s goal with shots, but James O’Grady came up with 18 saves for the Jaguars.

Zach Pruitt and Sam Parker each scored two goals for Carrboro, with Pruitt adding an assist. Alex Knapp, William Clark and Jack Newell each had one goal.

Carrboro (5-4, 3-2) was scheduled to play Tuesday against Cedar Ridge and then has a rematch with Chapel Hill at home Friday.

Chapel Hill had a game Tuesday at Orange and then has a 12-day gap between its game Friday at Carrboro and an April 11 match at home with Cedar Ridge.

East Chapel Hill, which blew out Northwood 12-1 last Friday, faced an undefeated Jordan team Monday, Northwood again on Tuesday and will host Orange (1-6) Friday.

Rain doesn’t stop CHHS, East at Knox Invitational

Chapel Hill’s Chris Reeder and East Chapel Hill’s Jonathan Beyle were both double-winners last Saturday in the J.J. Knox Invitational track and field meet in Mebane.

Running under wet conditions at Eastern Alamance High School’s track, Reeder clocked national elite times in the 800 meters (1:57.85) and the 1600 meters (4:22.22).

Beyle took firsts in the shot put (50 feet, 5.5 inches) and discus (145-11), with a misting rain adversely affecting his throws.

Coaches discussed postponing the meet, but agreed that going ahead would give everyone a chance to compete in conditions they might have to face in future NCHSAA regionals or state meets.

Chapel Hill’s Mitch McLeod, second behind Reeder in the 1600, won the 3200 meters in 9:58.9, and Tristan Van Ord of CHHS won the girls’ 3200 in 11:54.6. Teammate Hannah Blackburn finished in the top five in the 100, 300 hurdles and triple jump.

More honors for Davis at Swathmore

First-year Swarthmore College swimmer Supriya Davis, an East Chapel Hill alumna, added another highlight to her historic first-year season by finishing 14th and earning All-America honors Friday in the 200 butterfly (2:05.00) at the Division III Women’s Swimming Championships.

It was Davis’s second All-American swim in two days. Her time of 55.74 seconds in Thursday’s 100 butterfly — both a Swarthmore College and Centennial Conference record — earned her a 10th-place finish

Junior golfers card top-5 finishes

Emily Brooks, Gina Kim and Ben Griffin of Chapel Hill all finished in the top five in the CGA’s fourth annual Jimmy Anderson Junior Invitational at Jacksonville Country Club. The 36-hole event featured 96 junior golfers from North and South Carolina.

Evelyn Dole, a high school junior from Raleigh, carded a five-over-par 149 to finished six strokes ahead of Brooks, the 2011 champion. Kim, just a middle-schooler, shot 82-79—161 for a share of eighth place.

Conner Lewis of Davidson had to go extra holes to secure the boys’ victory. Lewis, Eric Bae of Cary and Joshua Martin of Pinehurst all finished with a 36-hole total of 143. Lewis rolled in a six foot putt on the first hole for a birdie three to take the title.

Griffin missed the playoff by two shots and finished alone in fourth place at one over par 145.

Mastrianni guides UNC crew to win

Cedar Ridge alumna Carie Mastrianni, now a junior at UNC, was the coxswain for Carolina’s second varsity eight last Saturday as the crew rowed to a victory Saturday morning at Lake Wheeler. The Tar Heels’ only home event of the season went off as scheduled despite rainy weather.

Carolina’s second varsity eight boat finished its race in 7:07.90, just ahead of Georgetown (7:11.17) and West Virginia (7:32.79).

“The second varsity eight raced incredibly well," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "It was close with Georgetown from stroke one and we held our composure and we were able to capitalize on that, never panicking and then taking a few-seat lead in the sprint. So, that was great and they posted a great time."

Georgetown took the varsity eight, the novice eight/third varsity eight, and the novice four. West Virginia won the varsity four.

PBC weighs in at Jordan Lake

Hillsborough’s Randy Fisher and Donnie Lowe of Mebane caught five bass totaling 17.89 pounds for fifth place in last Saturday’s Boats Unlimited Piedmont Bass Classic tournament at Jordan Lake. Tim Goad of Pittsboro and Sanford’s Billy Womble were sixth with five bass totaling 17.53 pounds.

The PBC’s next tournament will be Saturday’s Springhill Outfitters of Selma Open, at Falls Lake.
