Robert Raymond (Bob) Moore, 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning with his wife Ellie and son Robert Raymond, Jr. at his side. A remembrance gathering will be held at Carolina Meadows Retirement Community on Saturday, April 7 at 11:00 am.
Bob was born May 26, 1918 in Topeka, Kansas to Charles Raymond Moore and Frederica Bergen Moore of Summerfield, Kansas. Bob graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas in 1940 in Chemical Engineering and soon after joined Tennessee Eastman, a subsidiary of Eastman Kodak, in Kingsport, Tennessee where he met his wife Ellenor Fyfe (Ellie) Short while she was attending Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia. The two were married on August 1, 1942.
Bob worked with Eastman for his entire career –relocating several times but eventually returning to Kingsport, TN. Bob retired in 1978 to the Outer Banks of North Carolina where he and Ellie lived for 16 years and where he was an officer in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. In 1994 the two moved to Carolina Meadows Retirement Community in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
During his life Bob had many interesting hobbies including golfing, carpentry, sailing, painting, ham radio, and was an avid reader. Bob loved music, having played a clarinet in bands early in his life even playing with jazz bands in Kansas City in the 1930’s. He also enjoyed singing and was a welcome addition to church choirs and was a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society. At Carolina Meadows he organized and directed a barbershop group, the Elder Statesmen. No matter where Bob and Ellie lived, Bob was always involved in the life of his community serving in several capacities on various committees and boards. He served on the United Way Board for Chatham County, NC for several years while living at Carolina Meadows.
Bob was preceded in death by a son, Hamilton Fyfe Moore; granddaughter Erin Marie Moore and grandson Adam Wray Lokey. Bob is survived by his wife Eleanor, of Chapel Hill, NC; his sons Fredrick Bergen Moore and wife Fran Sullivan Moore of Philadelphia PA; Robert Raymond Moore, Jr. and wife Carol Ingram Moore of Big Stone Gap, VA; Coleman Short Moore and wife Mary Martin Moore of Grand Rapids Michigan; Monroe Harrison Moore and partner Lupe Perez of Asheville NC; and daughters Jennifer Moore Lokey and husband Fred Morris Lokey of Richardson Texas; Mary Moore Fout and husband Willis (Billy) Hunter Fout of Charlotte, NC; 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Carolina Meadows Residents Remembrance and Gift Fund in Bob’s name.
