• The Chatham County Literacy Council will hold its third annual Spring for Literacy Luncheon on April 18 at Governors Club.

Author Jay Tunney will discuss his book “The Prizefighter and the Playwright,” about the bond between his father, heavyweight boxing champion Gene Tunney, and literary master George Bernard Shaw. The event will include live and silent auctions, a video clip, book sales and a book signing.

All proceeds will benefit the non-profit’s free tutoring programs, which give Chatham County adults the reading, writing and English-language tools they need to break the cycle of poverty.

• Pianist Dawn Michelle Williams will perform a benefit concert to raise money for Food-Aid International’s Haiti Operation and for local hunger relief on April 22 at The Depot at Hillsborough Station, 246 S. Nash St., Hillsborough.

A raffle will be held to benefit Food-Aid, and attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods to fight local hunger. food-aid.org.

•  The Aveda Institute of Chapel Hill will present a Fashion Night Benefit from 6:30 to 10 p.m. April 24 at UNC’s William and Ida Friday Center. A runway show will showcase the “Colors of Life.” Proceeds go to support the Triangle Land Conservancy’s Clean Water Campaign.

•  The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation and Fleet Feet Sports will hold the inaugural 5K for Education on April 28.

Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District employees can participate in a six-week training program to prepare them for the run. Community members can also register for the 5K at publicschoolfoundation.org.

•  The Jason Ray Foundation will host a fundraising Brunch and Auction at the Carolina Club Alumni Hall on April 29, to benefit patients who have undergone solid organ transplantation at UNC Hospitals.

In addition, money raised will provide a permanent memorial to Jason Ray, the former UNC Tar Heel mascot who was killed in a hit and run accident at the NCAA Basketball Tournament regionals in 2007.

•  Members of the UNC baseball team will shave their heads for BaseBald, a fundraising event to raise money to fight childhood cancer, at the game against Georgia Tech on April 21 at Boshamer Stadium.
