Here are recent comments Mark received after a post on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school boards decision to absorb about $45,000 in unpaid lunch bills instead of sending the bills to a collections agency. Chris Weaver
(Republican candidate for District 2 on the Orange County Board of Commissioners): By not pursuing debtors the school board just taught a bad lesson. Rather than conditioning the public there is a "free lunch," I suggest at minimum the names and the amounts be publicly published with a four-day notice to the debtors. Want your name off the list? Pay up. It is amazing what a wee bit of public shame can accomplish. While we are at it, publish the names of those on the board not wishing to pursue taxpayer dollars. Mark Zimmerman
At most colleges if you have outstanding parking tickets, you don't graduate. There are plenty of ways to collect these funds. Unless, of course, the school budget is in such good shape that it can afford to give away money.
