Fourteen artworks made from cast-off and recycled materials are part of the fourth annual Scrapel Hill Art Contest and Exhibition, which opens with a free public reception and awards ceremony from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 20, at University Mall.

Juror Jan-Ru Wan, a Chapel Hill-based textile artist and assistant professor in the School of Art and Design at N.C. State, will announce the awards for first, second and third place at the opening reception. A People’s Choice Award will be presented at the show’s closing reception July 21.

Scrapel Hill celebrates the creative re-use of materials that might otherwise be discarded. This year’s exhibit includes a mechanical mosaic Venus flytrap, hanging tree stumps, sculpture fashioned out of cutlery and old tools, a tufted plastic bag quilt, a colorful assemblage of socks, and other inspired pieces.

The 13 participating artists come from both Carolinas and Virginia.

Although not a part of the Scrapel Hill competition, two metal sculptures by the late Efland-based artist Daniel Mathewson will also be featured to celebrate his contributions to artistic recycling. Mathewson was well- known for his imaginative found-object animals and people. He died in an accident in 2011.

Scrapel Hill is a partnership between University Mall and the Town of Chapel Hill Office of Public and Cultural Arts.
