Hillsborough - Cardinal Gibbons never was seriously challenged in the Carolina 3A Conference race this spring, but that’s okay with Chapel Hill coach Mike Bradley.

All four of the CHHS varsity golfers who scored in last week’s Carolina Conference tournament at Occoneechee Golf Club finished in the top 10 — earning all-conference honors in the process — and the Tigers won the Team Sportsmanship Award.

"It’s been a great year," Bradley said. "Our kids really put a lot of effort into it."

The all-conference honors for Chapel Hill’s Jack Haskins, Jason Cohn, Leon Pickles and Cameron Mauldin were automatic, based on their cumulative stroke totals for the spring. The sportsmanship plaque was voted on by the league’s coaches.

"That’s good," Btradley said last week. "I think it’s about time we won it. These guys are really likeable. They have been really laid back; they converse with people; they work and play well with others. Coaches notice things like that."

Haskins and Cohn finished the regular season tied for sixth place in the conference standings. Pickles and Maudlin tied for 10th.

Cardinal Gibbons’ Jeff Nemesi carded an 80 Monday at Occoneechee to fend off teammate Pat Mosca and Cohn, both in at 81, for medalist honors. Nemesi’s win preserved his lead in the conference standings and meant he finished as Player of the Year.

With three Crusaders finishing in the top five Monday, Cardinal Gibbons easily walked off with the conference championship again.

The Crusaders 329 total Monday was 33 strokes better than runner-up Chapel Hill (362) and gave Gibbons a final margin of 245 strokes in the cumulative season race — 2149 to 1904. Both easily qualified for the 3A Mideast regional to be contested May 7 at Whispering Pines Country Club outside of Pinehurst.

Oxford Webb totaled 376 Monday to finish with 2242 for the season, taking third in a relatively close battle with Orange. The Panthers, led by an 84 from Sonny Burnette and 87 for Taylor Cook 87, carded 382 in the final match and ended up with 2270.

That gave the conference’s third possible regional berth to Webb.

To gear up for the regionals, Bradley is scheduling a friendly match with Cardinal Gibbons, playing a either Raleigh Country Club or Chapel Hill Country Club depending on which can get the players onto the course after school.
