Chapel Hill

The Chapel Hill Police Department is investigating multiple reports of a peeping tom in several areas near the UNC Campus in the early morning hours of Friday, May 4. The suspect is described as a white male in his early 20s. He is believed to be 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet tall with short hair. The suspect may be operating a white Ford Focus or similar vehicle.

Residents who have any information concerning these incidents are asked to contact the Police Department at 919-968-2760 or call Crime Stoppers at 919-942-751. Residents can also submit tips to Crime Stoppers online at crimestoppers-chcunc.org.

• Chapel Hill Fire Department, Chapel Hill Police Department and State Bureau of Investigation officials are seeking information about the cause of a house fire May 1 on Craig Street.

Neighbors woke around 1:58 a.m. to a loud noise and found flames on the front porch of the vacant, two-story wood-frame house at 605 Craig St. Chapel Hill firefighters responded to the call to find a heavily engaged fire at the front of the house. Orange County EMS and Chapel Hill police also responded.

Firefighters used “an elevated master stream to extinguish the fire and worked fervently to protect exposure and harm to the adjacent structures,” a news release states. The fire was extinguished within 33 minutes, the release states.

Investigators ask anyone with information about the fire to contact the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760.

• James Earl Craig, 51, of 104 Louis Armstrong Court, Apt. A, was charged May 1 with felony larceny from a person, police reported.

• Keiland Jamal Harris, 21, of 3014 Glenwood Ave., Durham, was charged April 30 with felony maintaining a vehicle for the sale or delivery of a controlled substance, felony possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana, and failure to appear, police reported.

• Benjamin Forrest Apple, 29, of 8623 Nicholson Farm Lane, Graham, was charged April 28 with felony speeding to elude arrest, having an expired registration, having a revoked registration, driving with a suspended license and no liability insurance, police reported.

• Jeffrey Velez, 18, of 920 Lancaster St., Apt. A, Durham, was charged April 27 with felony receiving or possessing a stolen motor vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving without a license, police reported.

Hillsborough

• Police are seeking information about a strong-arm robbery reported April 28 in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart Supercenter at Hampton Pointe in Hillsborough.

Police reported that an 81-year-old female employee was leaving the Wal-Mart at 11:05 p.m. when a white man in his 20s struck her in the back of the head, pushing her to the ground. The man stole the woman’s purse, which contained about $15 in cash, the report stated.

The victim was taken to Durham Regional Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is described as being between 5 feet 9 inches and 6 feet tall, with a medium build and weighing about 175 pounds. He was wearing a green sweatshirt, black shorts and black sneakers, and was driving a small, dark-colored pickup truck, possibly a Chevrolet S-10.
