Governors Club golfers help Lineberger CenterMore than 170 people took part in a golf tournament and luncheon organized by the Governors Club Womens Golf Association of Chapel Hill. UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center received almost $10,000 in proceeds from the event. We decided we wanted to keep the proceeds local, said Donna Galer, who with Ginny Ware and Sharon Livingston formed the organizing committee for the clubs event. The day featured a presentation on aging and cancer by UNC Lineberger associate director Ned Sharpless. It was great to hear about research here in our backyard, said Elston Miles, the GCWGA president. Event participants were so eager to ask Dr. Sharpless questions that we had to bring the luncheon to a close or we would have been there all afternoon.Carrboro seeks volunteers for July 4The Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department is seeking volunteers for its upcoming July 4th Celebration. Volunteers are needed in several areas, and the work will qualify for service learning hours. Areas of service include: Childrens Activities assisting with fun, interactive arts, crafts, games and tattoo booths at the Carrboro Town Commons and Weaver Street Market. Info Table to help with T-shirt and raffle ticket sales, as well as help festival goers with questions. Stage Attendants to help at the main stage or childrens stage with loading and unloading of equipment. Recycling/Litter Patrol This is a great opportunity to walk around the event and hear the music while still keeping Carrboro beautiful. This is also a good volunteer opportunity for groups. Runners to assist at the main information table with getting other volunteers signed in, helping vendors find their placement and relieving staff during breaks. Runners may also be asked to deliver items between information tables and activities.Every effort is made to allow volunteers to choose where they want to help, but the town asks that they be flexible. For more information, call 919-918-7364.
