1. Parents: Jennie and George Lawrence, Pittsboro

2. School: Northwood High School Class of 2012, still undecided between UNC Charlotte and Guilford College.

3. Other sports: Played on Northwood High’s soccer team that reached the NCHSAA championship game, and played on Northwood High’s Carolina-12 basketball championship team.

4. Prefers baseball: “Because I’ve always just enjoyed it more.”

5. Throws: Right. Bats: Right.

6. Best pitch: Fastball, 84 mph.

7. Favorite position other that pitcher: “Shortstop … but pitching is by far my favorite; you get to have an impact on every play, as opposed to waiting for the ball to come to you.”

8. Senior year: Pitched 61 innings, with ERA of 1.71, 78 strikeouts and final record of 6-4. Northwood finished 23-8.

9. Favorite win: Started and won Northwood’s 3-2 victory May 1 over South Granville that guaranteed the Chargers a share of the Carolina-12 Conference championship.

10. No-no-hitter: Lawrence, Northwood baseball’s top starter, twice came within an inning of a no-hitter this spring. In one March game, he was down to the final out before giving up a bloop single. Three strikes later, he had a shutout win but not the no-hitter.

He never let the single hit bother him. He had pitched a perfect game in Little League at age 10, and that taught him a big lesson: “It takes an awful lot of luck to get a no-hitter. Still, I wished I’d gotten one this year; it’s an amazing thing.”

And there’s something else.

“A lot of people know about the success we had this year. The biggest thing was that we all played together as a team. That’s why we were successful. We all loved playing together. We had a great time.”
