Today's Best Shot comes from Kathleen Rigby of Durham, who took this photo in 1981 in Kenya. This photo is of Kamante, from "Out Of Africa." Kamante was the young boy that Karen Blixen taught to be a cook in her home after healing his very serious wounds. We lived close to Blixen's home, but closer still to Peter Beard's camp. (Beard wrote a number of books about Kenya). Kamante lived at Peter's camp, so I walked to the camp one day and took Kamante's photograph, realizing that he was getting on in years. Kamante died not long afterwards. During my decade in Kenya, I tried to capture the many changes that were taking place as so many tribal peoples left their traditions, identities, ethnic dress, and ways to move to cities and to wear western clothing and adopt global ways. This photo can be seen hanging in the Karen Blixen Museum in Karen, Kenya. It also became the cover photograph for the 2004 book 'My African Existence' at the Karen Blixen Museet (Museum) in Denmark.
