HILLSBOROUGH - Law enforcement officials are looking for a Roxboro man charged with multiple counts of peeping after he missed his court dates on recent charges.
An arrest warrant was issued July 3 for John Whitt, 60, of 2089 Virgilina Road, when he did not appear in Orange County District Court on June 28 in connection with a June 24 arrest.
Whitt was charged with misdemeanor peeping in Chapel Hill when police say a woman found him outside her Mill Creek apartment and called 911.
The woman was undressing when she heard noises outside her apartment, police said. She went out to investigate and found a man whom she later identified as Whitt.
Whitt also missed his court date on two counts of felony peeping Tuesday in Orange County Superior Court related to his arrest Oct. 31, 2011. Police say he videotaped up women’s skirts during Chapel Hill’s Halloween celebration on Franklin Street.
Before a state law passed in 2003, secret peeping with a video camera was a misdemeanor. But the new law, passed after Whitt was charged with secretly videotaping women at a UNC-Chapel Hill sorority in 2001, made it a felony to videotape someone’s naked body or undergarments without consent
Whitt has been charged with more than 20 counts of misdemeanor peeping.
