CHAPEL HILL - Orange County Animal Services received its eighth positive rabies result for 2012 Tuesday.

On July 14, two outdoor dogs in the area of Highway 57 and Miller Road in Hillsborough attacked and killed a stray raccoon. The dogs had been vaccinated against rabies and will be revaccinated.

According to state rabies law, animals with current rabies vaccinations that may have been exposed to rabies must be revaccinated within five days. Unvaccinated pets that may have been exposed to rabies must either be killed or quarantined for six months.

Residents should not handle pets that may have been exposed to rabies without gloves because they are at risk for secondary exposure.

A rabies vaccination clinic will be at the Animal Services Center, at 1601 Eubanks Road in Chapel Hill for $10, on Thursday, July 19, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Most rabies cases in the country have been traced to bats. Orange County Animal Services encourages residents to contact animal control if there is any possibility of bat exposure.

Should your pet come in contact with an animal that might be considered a rabies carrier, contact Animal Control immediately at 919-942-PETS (7387). If it is after regular business hours, call 911
