HILLSBOROUGH - Prosecutors will not seek the death penalty for a man charged with killing his girlfriend at her northern Orange County home in January.

Christopher Eugene Rone, 42, of 5507 N.C. 86 North, is charged with felony first-degree murder in the shooting death of 33-year-old Custain Levoya Crisp, of 601 Hurdle Mills Road.

Rone also is charged with felony possession of a firearm by a felon. He has been held in the Orange County Jail since his arrest Jan. 14.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the shooting after 11 p.m. Jan. 20. They found Crisp dead of a gunshot wound to the head and arrested Rone without incident, according to reports. They found a handgun on top of a car.

Rone’s previous criminal history includes two driving while impaired charges in the mid-1990s and a felony habitual driving while impaired conviction for which he served 18 months. He also was convicted in 1989 of felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

His case has been continued to Aug. 7.
