Hiroshima observance

CHAPEL HILL The Orange County Peace Coalition will sponsor a commemoration of the 1945 nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. The gathering will take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at Peace and Justice Plaza (corner of Henderson and East Franklin streets).

Participants are encouraged to share reflections, poems, art, and songs.

“Sixty-seven years after the slaughter at Hiroshima, crises created by nuclear energy continue: weapons, Fukushima, and, in our state, energy plants,” organizers said in a news release. “How do they affect our community and each of us?”

Speakers will include local elected officials and community leaders. Classical and folk musicians will also perform. Participants are also encouraged to bring chairs.

Town seeking ideas

for Estes Drive area

CHAPEL HILL Do you live or work in the Estes Drive area? Do you have ideas about how the area could be improved or enhanced?

If so, the Town of Chapel Hill’s Public Information Open House for the Estes Drive Focus Area is a meeting you will want to attend. Save the date for 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, OR 8 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29. Meeting locations will be announced soon. The two sessions will be identical, so attend the one that works best for your schedule.

The Estes Drive Focus Area includes the Estes Drive-Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. intersection and generally includes the area extending just north of Piney Mountain Road, south to the YMCA area, and along Estes Drive to Seawell School Road and toward the Chapel Hill Public Library located on Library Drive.

While initial policy guidance for the Estes Drive Focus Area is provided in the Chapel Hill 2020 comprehensive plan, additional community input, Town staff and consultant analysis, and planning is needed to achieve the goal of developing a new zoning code for this area. The Public Information Open House is the first step in this process.

Volunteers needed for

county housing board

HILLSBOROUGH Many opportunities exist for volunteer citizens who have a desire to become more involved with issues that affect the future of Orange County.

Currently the Orange County Board of Commissioners is recruiting for citizen volunteers on the Orange County Housing Authority.

The goal of the Orange County Housing Authority is to provide decent, safe, and sanitary housing for the low and moderate income families in the County. OCHA currently manages approximately 615 Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers in the County and provides leadership for other affordable housing initiatives in the County.

The authority is governed by a seven (7) member Board, appointed by the Orange County Board of Commissioners for staggered terms for periods of no more than five years each. At least one member of the Board shall be a Section 8 voucher holder. Other board members may represent the following areas of interest: real estate; development; affordable housing; municipal and/or real estate law; and banking.
