Architect Donald E. Stewart (9-13-1926) passed from this world August 4, 2012 after fighting a courageous battle with colon cancer while under Amedisys Hospice Care. After receiving his Masters Degree in City and Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina, Donald went on to become a successful businessman and designed many of the buildings throughout Chapel Hill. Of note, one of his first commissions was for UNC with his design of the Carmichael Auditorium, the home court of the basketball team for many years; the old public library on Franklin Street, and both the Fire Station and Police Station on Airport Road.
Surviving is his loving wife of 35 years, Brenda who never left his side; stepson, Mark Mallat, Sandra Stewart, Deborah Stewart Bowling, her husband, David Bowling, and son, Michal Stewart and his wife, Debra Stewart, and last but not least, his loving dog Heidi.
There will be a celebration of life gathering to be announced at a later date. Finally to all those who knew him, he says “Keep Smiling”.
