Virginia Jenkins Baucom died August 7th at Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem. She was born September 21, 1919 in Roanoke Rapids to Thomas Monroe Jenkins and Lillian Bell Jenkins. She was the youngest and last surviving of four children. She was Miss Roanoke Rapids 1936 and graduated from high school there. She was one of the early students at the new school of nursing at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, class of 1941. After working at Duke Hospital, she began work at Hospital Saving in Chapel Hill, where she met and married a young accountant, Walter Baucom. They were married 56 years until his death in 2002. She lived most of her adult life in Chapel Hill.
She is survived by sons, Walter Winfred Baucom, Jr. (Linda) of Jacksonville, Fl., James Thomas Baucom (Martha Ann) of Clemmons; grandsons, Thomas Winfred Baucom (Cindi) and William Blake Baucom. She was able to meet and hold great-granddaughter, Emerson Blake Baucom, born July 21st.
A graveside service was held Thursday August 9th in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery, 1721 Legion Rd., Chapel Hill, NC. In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent to Aldergate United Methodist Church, 632 Laurel Hill Rd., Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
