Hilltoppers lax prep for season

The Carolina Hilltopper 2012 fall lacrosse season gets underway at the end of September with an open tryout for its U-13, U-15, and High School programs.

The Hilltoppers’ program is dedicated to teaching lacrosse fundamentals and allowing players to develop to their full potential.

The fall schedule will feature Sunday afternoon practices and two weekend tournaments.

Neville, Broadway qualify for Mid-Am

Chapel Hill golfers Gus Neville and Michael Broadway both shot well enough Thursday at the Carolina Trace Lake Course in Sanford to qualify for the Carolina Golf Association’s upcoming Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship. Playing on the 6,471-yards, par-72 layout, Neville carded a 6-over-par 78 and Broadway came in at the cutoff line of 8-over.

The 51st Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship will be played Sept. 19-21 in Greensboro.

ACC tickets on sale

Tickets for the 2012 Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game are now on sale. The prices are $25 and $40 for Upper Level, $70 and $90 for Lower Level, and $150 and $175 for Club Level. Fans may purchase tickets through the official website ( ACCFootballCharlotte.com) or through ticketmaster.com. TheACC championship game will be played Dec. 1 in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium.

McCreery returns to the diamond

The Durham Bulls have announced that former Garner High School baseball player Scotty McCreery will headline festivities at the 2012 Gildan Triple-A National Championship Game at the Durham Bulls Athletics Park on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

McCreery, of course, is better known as a winner from American Idol.

Now considered a country music superstar, he will throw out the game’s ceremonial first pitch and perform “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh inning stretch.
