Frances Knight Horton, 91, of Carolina Meadows, Chapel Hill, N.C., died September 3, 2012 after a brief illness, surrounded by her devoted family. She was born in Greenville County S.C. on September 5, 1920, daughter of Edward Arnold and Virginia Griffin Knight.
Frances graduated from Duke University in 1941, where she was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority. She lived for many years in Charlotte, N.C., where she was a member of Myers Park Methodist Church. She was active in numerous organizations, including the DAR and the Charity League of Charlotte, and was a supporter of Florence Crittenton Services. She was especially involved with the PTA, and served on the North Carolina PTA Board of Directors. Aside from her family, she derived her greatest pleasure from reading, gardening, and spending as much time as possible at the beach.
She is survived by a son, William S. Horton, Jr.; grandson William S. Horton III; a daughter Betty F. Horton; grandson Zachary Paulovits; great-grandson Kenan Paulovits; daughter Peggy H. Oettinger and husband Kenneth B. Oettinger; and daughter-in-law Gail Malerich-Horton. Frances was predeceased by her husband of 63 years William S. Horton, Sr.; her son Kenneth Lee Horton; and sisters Edna Agee and Margaret Albritton.
A funeral service will be held at a later date at Greenville Memorial Gardens in Greenville, S.C.
