Henry N. Goldstein, 83, of Chapel Hill, died Friday, September 7, 2012 at Carolina Meadows Health Center from pulmonary complications. He was born September 8,1928 in Germany and grew up in Switzerland before immigrating to the United States at 23.
He served in the Swiss Army in the anti-aircraft division and attended Hotel School in Lucerne, Switzerland completing a three-year apprenticeship before receiving his chefs diploma.
Henry began his career in the kitchen of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City and remained with Hilton International Hotels for ten years in NY, Puerto Rico and Istanbul, Turkey. In 1959 he entered a hotel management program at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal where he met his wife Margrit whom he married in 1962 while working for the St. Thomas Hilton. After St. Thomas, he managed hotels in Tobago for twelve years before returning to the United States in 1974 to work for Radisson Hotels in Minneapolis and Atlanta. In 1984 he arrived in Chapel Hill to manage the newly opened Hotel Europa. He subsequently managed the Chicago Mayfair Regent and Cordillera Resort in Colorado before returning in 1988 to retire in Carrboro. He was a member of Chapel Hill Kehillah, Chapel Hill Rotary Club, Golden K. Kiwanis Club, the Swiss Club and the Waldorf Astoria Alumni Association. He was also a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow. In addition to his parents, Willy and Hermine Goldstein of Switzerland, he is preceded in death by his sister Lilo.
He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty years, Margrit; and his poodle, Lola.
