HENDERSON - Offensive versatility has been one of the key components of Carrboro’s 5-0 start this season, and it was on full display last week as the 2A Jaguars rolled over 3A Northern Vance 42-7.

Carrboro scored on a series of quick drives Friday at Vikings Stadium to lead 35-7 by halftime. Quarterback Alex McVeigh, Douglas Parrish and Trai Sharp each scored in the first 18 minutes.

McVeigh set up Carrboro’s last TD of the first half with a 32-yard pass to Marlin Johnson.

"One of the best things about this team is that it is unselfish," Carrboro coach Jason Tudryn said. "It’s not ’me-me-me.’ It’s about the kids doing what they have to do to win."

Parrish ended up with three touchdowns, on two one-yard plunges and a 32-yard run with 8:02 to play for the game’s last score. Sharp has two long runs — 40 and 13 yards — for touchdowns. McVeigh optioned his way to the night’s longest scoring run — 49 yards — in the first quarter.

Carrboro was up 28-0 before Northern Vance (1-4) got on the board with a 14-yard scramble by Tyrrick Bullock with 2:32 to play before halftime.

The Jaguars will present a big challenge to undefeated Chapel Hill’s defense, which has been excellent all year. The Tigers have outscored opponents 110-56 so far, and twice had shutouts going into the fourth quarter, only to see opponents score on big plays late.

Tudryn cautioned his team in a post-game meeting to not invest too heavily in the game with Chapel Hill — the last one before both teams begin conference play next week.

Last year, both went into the CHHS-Carrboro game at 5-0. Chapel Hill won 22-9 and Carrboro went into a three-game tailspin.

"Last year, we put too much at stake in that game," Tudryn said. "You never want to look ahead, and this is an important game, but you want to keep it in perspective. In the long run, this is just another non-conference game."
