CARRBORO - A Carrboro man was killed early Sunday while walking against traffic on Jones Ferry Road, the Highway Patrol said Wednesday.

Bernardo Morales-Mendoza, 43, of Jones Ferry Road and originally Mexico, was walking eastbound in the westbound traffic lane when he was struck by an oncoming 2006 Honda at 2:27 a.m. Sunday, Trooper S. Foster said.

The driver, Rebecca Seymour of Snow Camp, was traveling “a little under” the 45 mph limit and was not charged, he said.

The section of Jones Ferry Road, near the intersection with Old Greensboro Road is dark and another car coming from the other direction may have made it hard for Seymour to see Morales-Mendoza, Foster said.

Safety experts advise pedestrian to walk against traffic. There is 4 feet 6 inches of tall grass between the edge of the road and a guard rail where the accident occurred, Foster said.
