Seven-year-old Byrum Brown of Durham smashed the North Carolina state record for the male, seven-and-under, road one-mile distance in the Raleigh Magnificent Mile race run Sept. 16 in downtown Raleigh.

The previous age-group record was 7 minutes, 17 seconds – set in October 2000 by Asher Hertzberg in the Chapel Hill Franklin Street Mile and tied in last year’s Magnificent Mile race by Noah Masier.

Brown finished the 2012 Magnificent Mile with a time of 6:15 – more than a minute faster than the former record.

Byrum also has a 1,500 meter personal record of 05:32.19 and set a national record this summer in the Junior Olympics with the Carolina Elite Sub-Bantam (8 and under) Boys 4x400m Relay with a time of 4:52.00.

Also breaking the previous state record was 7-year-old Evan Milledge of Chapel Hill with a time of 7:08. Evan ran with the Mini Milers running club in Chapel Hill last spring and is training with them again this fall.

Last summer, Evan participated in the Carolina Godiva Summer Track series and became the youngest ever recipient of their “Ironman Award.” He will compete this November in the Junior Olympics Cross Country Championship series as a member of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Pacers running club.

Other local runners did well in the Magnificent Mile, including some elite team members. , and USATF Elite team members dominated the age-group winners.

Andrew Powell of Chapel Hill won the males 15-19 age group with a time of 4:36.4. Former Chapel Hill High School miler Kyle Villemain took third place with a 4:48.3, just behind runnrup Sean Flanagan of Carthage.

Elite veterans John Hinton (4:45.7) and Joan Nesbit Mabe (5:38.4), charter members of Elite-affiliated Carrboro Athletics Club, both won their respective 50-54 age groups.

Triangle Champions TC members Daniel Maddison (4:55.6) and Coleman Mitchell Jr. (5:06.5), both of Durham, finished 1-2 in the males 10-14 age group, and George Linney III of Durham (4:40.8) won the males 35-39 division.

TCTC’s Victoria Swepson of Durham won the girls 9-and-under group in 6:13.9, while Elite runner Elena Bradley of Durham was third in 7:31.5. Elite’s Marisa Ryan of Durham (5:08.5) won the females 25-29 bracket, while Kara Bonneau (5:52.6) of Bull City Track Club was first among females 30-34.

Jay Smith of Chapel Hill won the men’s 60-64 bracket.

Other local runners with top-three bracket finishes included: Bobby Torphy (4:25.2) of Chapel Hill, second in the males 20-24; Rey Ramirez (7:51.8), runnerup among males 65-69; Chapel Hill’s Kristin Sellers (5:12.5) and Marley Burns (5:22.9), second and third among females 20-24; Anna Banka (6:26.9), third in females 30-34 group; Caren Margarelli (5:47.2) and Alicia Parr (5:48.6), both of Durham, 2-3 in females 40-44 group; and Jamie Dilwweg (6:28.7), third among females 45-49.
