YMCA Pumpkin Run

Registration for the YMCA’s annual Pumpkin Run though Carolina North Forest is now open. Join everyone for Chapel Hill’s best family-fun run just before dusk on Oct. 27. The scenic 4K run is enjoyable for everyone, and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA hosts a great party back at the Y with a DJ, games, prizes and even a costume contest.

The Pumpkin Run fills up every year, so be sure to sign up early. See sportoften.com/events for more information or to register, or call the YMCA at 919-442-9622 for more information.

Carrboro Co-Rec Softball

Southern Rail came up with its biggest win to date in Carrboro co-rec softball when it defeated Bread & Butter 15-11 last Thursday. In Thursday’s other games, East Main downed Ghost Riders 16-3, and 2nd Wind defeated Fighting Pinecones 17-7.

That left 300 East Main Street alone atop the Carrboro Rec League standings at 10-1. Bread & Butter, the only team to beat East Main so far this season, fell to 9-2. Southern Rail was at 3-6. All other games last week were postponed to Oct. 2 due to bad weather.

Playground Closed

The Town of Chapel Hill temporarily has closed the playground at Homestead Park, 100 Northern Park Drive, for repairs. For locations of other parks in Chapel Hill, visit www.townofchapelhill.org/parks.

Orange cycling tour

The Tour d’Orange (County) bike tour ( www.tarwheelsms.com), staged by Tarwheels Cycling Club on September 22, will start from the Visitors’ Center on E. King Street in Hillsborough. The cost is $25, with options for 30, 60, and 100-mile courses.

Tar Heel Trot

UNC’s Kappa Kappa Gamma will present the Tar Heel Trot on Sept. 30, a 5K supporting Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test and the Carolina Parent’s Fund. Check-in and race-day registration will begin at 8 am at the Old Well. For further information, visit sportoften.com.

Supersprint Triathlon

The Triangle SportsPlex annual Supersprint Triathlon is scheduled for Oct. 6, and registration is through setupevents.com/, and though Endurance Magazine’s Ramblin’ Rose Women’s Triathlon on Sunday, Oct. 7 is sold out, a limited number of charity spots are still open through ramblinroseevents.com.

Bass Fishing Sunday

The next Piedmont Bass Classics tournament will be the 2012 JB Custom Rods Fall Team Bass Trail Qualifier No. 4 on Sunday at Falls Lake, starting out of Ledge Rock Wildlife Ramp. This will be the last PBC event of the season at Falls Lake.

Other remaining PBC fall events include: Oct. 7 at Shearon Harris Lake, Oct. 14 at Jordan Lake, Oct. 28 at Shearon Harris, and then the championship Nov. 4 back at Shearon Harris.

Auto Racing at OCS

This Saturday will be "High School Senior Night" at the Orange County Speedway in Rougement. All seniors with their high school i.d. will be admitted for $5. The Grandstands open at 5 p.m. Auto racing begins at 7 p.m.

A full night of events is planned, headlined by a 75-lap Late Model Select race. The slate also includes races for rarely seen American Modifieds and East Coast Flatheads.
