CHAPEL HILL - Police released radio-traffic recordings Wednesday in their investigation into the killing of Faith Hedgepeth, the 19-year-old UNC-Chapel Hill student found dead in her apartment Sept. 7.

Police have said little about the case, including how she died. A judge has sealed the original 911 call and search warrants.

Some of the audio files released Wednesday were edited for investigative purposes, Chapel Hill police said in a news release.

The first file contains nearly four minutes of radio traffic from officers responding to Hedgepeth’s apartment at Hawthorne at the View on Old Chapel Hill Road. It begins at 11:06 a.m., as dispatchers tell responding officers that Durham communications has reported a 19-year-old female with cardiac arrest, not breathing and unconscious. The Chapel Hill Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Midway through the file, a female can be heard crying loudly in the background. An officer tells dispatchers to send investigators to the apartment and says he will begin to secure the scene.

“We’re going to need Crisis down here,’’ he says. The file ends at 11:18 a.m.

The second file begins at 11:32 a.m. An officer reports “the home number provided” was called with no answer. Officers then ask to be connected with Carrboro police officers to make a notification to a subject. A traffic accident is also discussed, though it’s unclear if that is related to Hedgepeth’s death. An officer reports back that the notification call went straight to voicemail. The file ends at 5:57 p.m.

The third file begins at 11:19 a.m. Dispatchers say emergency medical services personnel on the scene have reported Hedgepeth was DOA (dead on arrival). The file ends at 3:42 p.m.
