Josue Turcios has been selected as a 2012-13 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar.
The NHRP was initiated in 1983 to identify outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. Students recognized by the NHRP are at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino and have achieved a minimum PSAT/NMSQT/PAA score for their region. Students with GPAs of 3.5 or higher are designated as Scholars.

Hyman Muss of Chapel Hill has been honored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure for “Discoveries that Unraveled the Biology of Breast Cancer and Work to Improve Treatments.”
Muss is receiving the Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction in Clinical Research for his critical contributions to the treatment of breast cancer, in particular the treatment of breast cancer in older women. His work on clinical trials specifically targeted to older women has provided the foundation for offering geriatric patients state-of-the art treatments and has had a significant impact on the standard of care and quality of life for elderly women with breast cancer.
Muss will speak on Dec. 5 at the 35th annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, a major international gathering of breast cancer researchers, clinicians, and patient advocacy organizations from around the world being held Dec. 4-8 in San Antonio, Texas.
• The Chapel Hill Police Department has promoted K9 Officer
Gabe Shinn to the rank of sergeant. He was promoted during a ceremony in the Town Council Chamber at Town Hall.
Shinn has served with the department since 1998 and has served as a K9 handler for the police department since 2003.
