Whenever Cardinal Gibbons and Chapel Hill High School meet, it’s a big thing. Whatever the sport, the odds are that one of them is the defending champion.

And so it was Thursday evening at Chapel Hill, when the Tigers hosted the Crusaders in a Carolina 3A Conference volleyball match; Cardinal Gibbons is the two-time defending NCHSAA 3A state champion.

The Tigers did as well against Gibbons as anyone this season. After dropping the first set 16-25, CHHS came back to win the second 25-21, tying the match at 1-1. Even after Cardinal Gibbons won the third 25-13, the Tigers fought until the end of the fourth before losing 23-25.

It was only the third time this year that Crusaders have give up a set.

That gave Gibbons (8-1 overall, 5-0 conference) a 3-1 match win and sole possession of first place in the Carolina 3A. Chapel Hill fell to 12-4, 4-1.

Chapel Hill’s Megan Blunden made 13 kills and one solo block, while Catherine Romaine made her 6-3 presence felt along the front, making nine kills on 12 attempts (giving her 81 kills this season), along with two solo blocks and a service ace.
