Friday matchups

No. 8 Carrboro

at Northwood

This is such a big game, it feels like it really should be the season finale for both teams. With South Granville behind them, Northwood is the biggest major hurdle between the Jaguars and the Carolina 2A Conference championship.

The Chargers average 24 points a game. But Carrboro has been the class of the Carolina 2A, leading the conference in both scoring offense (37.7 ppg) and scoring defense (12.7 ppg).

Records: Carrboro 7-0, 1-0 Carolina 2A. Northwood 4-3, 1-0 Carolina 2A

Series: Carrboro has never beaten Northwood in five tries. Carrboro’s closest game with Northwood came two years ago in Pittsboro, 35-34.

Northern Vance

at Chapel Hill

The Tigers are in a foul mood after losing two straight -- albeit to two of the Triangle top teams: Carrboro and Cardinal Gibbons. Former East Chapel Hill head coach Darien Harris has left Northern Vance and now the Vikings have given up more points than any other league team (179).

Records: Chapel Hill 5-2, 0-1 Carolina 3A. Northern Vance 1-5, 0-1 Carolina 3A.

Series: Chapel Hill has beaten Northern Vance every year since the two got back into the same conference in 2009.

East Chapel Hill

at Northern Durham

East Chapel Hill will play Northern in Durham County Memorial Stadium. Northern moved a game up on East and Hillside with last Friday’s solid 37-17 win at rainy Riverside. The wet conditions played into the knights’ hands; they pass when they have to and prefer to run, run, run with the tandem of Kylyn Flemming and Alphonso Gbojueh.

Records: East Chapel Hill 4-2, 2-0 PAC (before Monday’s game.) Northern Durham 4-2, 3-0 PAC.

Series: Northern has topped East Chapel Hill twice since the Wildcats defeated the Knights 24-21 on a 50-yard, last-second field goal by future UNC kicker Thomas Moore.

Granville Central

at Cedar Ridge

Granville Central has never won a Carolina 2A conference game, losing 13 straight, and have one 3-37 overall since moving up to 2A ball.

Records: Cedar Ridge 0-7, 0-0 Carolina 2A. Granville Central 0-7, 0-1 Carolina 2A.

Series: Cedar Ridge has beaten Central all three times since the Panthers joined the Carolina 2A, including last year’s 31-20 win in Stem.

Orange at Oxford Webb

Webb got its first win of the season last week.

Records: Orange 5-1, 1-0 Carolina 3A. Webb 1-5, 1-0 Carolina 3A.

Series: Orange has won 2 of the last 3, including a 19-13 win last year, but hasn’t won at Oxford since 2002.

Player of the week

Trai Sharp

Carrboro, Soph., RB

Sharp rushed for 135 yards and the Jaguars’ last three touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime against defending conference championSouth Granville.
