Most Popular

Cedar Ridge at Carrboro

Cedar Ridge lead this series 4-1, though Carrboro won last year 42-21 on the road, and the Red Wolves can feel good after getting a win last week against Granville Central. But no one has stopped No.8 ranked Carrboro this season, and Cedar Ridge is highly unlikely to be the first.

In the Carolina 2A Conference, only winless Granville Central has given up more points (341) than has Cedar Ridge (243). Carrboro meanwhile has the most efficient offense, averaging 35.5 points a game.

Records: Cedar Ridge 1-7, 1-0 Carolina 2A; Carrboro 8-0, 2-0 Carolina 2A.

Series: Cedar Ridges leads 4-1, though Carrboro won last year 42-21 on the road.

Oxford Webb at Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill, No. 18 in the News & Observer’s rankings of Triangle teams last week, looked like its old self last week in defeating Northern Vance. But the Tigers better be ready this week, because Webb is tougher than its record indicates. RB Deshawn Skipwith and QB Corey Evans give the Warriors a nice 1-2 punch.

Records: Oxford Webb 2-6 overall, 1-1 Carolina 3A; Chapel Hill 6-2, 1-1 Carolina 3A.

Series: CHHS leads 2-1 after winning 31-14 last year.

Southern Durham at East Chapel Hill

Southern, No. 19 in this week’s N&O poll, has never lost to East Chapel Hill, which were both in the Five-County 3A Conference before moving up to the PAC-6 4A. No rivals have been harder on East than the Spartans, who beat the Wildcats 71-27 last year, the most points ever given up by an East football team. Southern went four years (2006-2009) without even giving up a point to the Wildcats, beating them 178-0 in that span.

Records: Southern 4-4 overall, 3-1 PAC; East Chapel Hill 4-3, 2-1 PAC.

Series: Southern is 11-0 against the Wildcats.

Southern Vance at Orange

Ranked No. 12 by the N&O, Orange may have the deepest roster in the Carolina 3A Conference, and coach Pat Moser has found the right formula for his players to reel off four straight wins. For Southern Vance to stop its two-game skid, the Raiders must find a way to stop the Panthers’ bevy of running backs.

Records: Southern Vance 4-3 overall, 0-2 Carolina 3A; Orange 6-1, 2-0 Carolina 3A.

Series: S. Vance has won all 3 meetings, including 27-12 last year.

Northwood at South Granville

Northwood has lost two of its last three, but the losses have been to two quality opponents (Lee Senior and No. 8 Carrboro). South Granville also has lost two of its last three in similar fashion, (falling to Carrboro and Northeast Guilford). With Sean Bowman rushing for 263 yards and Matt McCutcheon passing for 119, the Vikings were still good enough to take Carrboro to OT two weeks ago.

Records: Northwood 4-4 overall, 1-1 Carolina 3A; South Granville 5-3, 0-1 Carolina 2A.

Series: S. Granville won 35-7 last year and leads 2-1.

Player of the Week

Darius Allen

Chapel Hill, Jr., RB

Allen came up big when it counted last Friday, rushing for after halftime for two touchdowns and 75 of his total 130 yards to help Chapel Hill rally from a 19-6 halftime deficit to a 20-19 conference win over Northern Vance.
