CHAPEL HILL - Rarely is a high school football game as lopsided and yet as closely contested as Chapel Hill’s 25-0 win Friday against Oxford Webb.

The Tigers (7-2) amassed 279 yards of total offense, while the Warriors (2-7) produced a relatively respectable 234. But turnovers, along with Chapel Hill’s ability to consistently make plays on third and fourth downs, preserved the Tigers’ homecoming shutout.

“The guys are getting back to what we do best, and that’s play solid football from start to finish,” Chapel Hill coach Issac Marsh said. “They were on the attack from the start. We just have to keep it going.”

Both teams favored a ground-based offensive attack. After an early fumble by the Warriors, Chapel Hill’s Darius Allen ran for one of his two first-half touchdowns, at 50-yard run. The Tigers led 7-0 after five minutes.

Webb’s Tobiah Lewis used his bruising size to advance the line of scrimmage. Chapel Hill struggled to contain the fullback, though when the Warriors began to threaten, they again turned the ball over — this time, on an interception thrown by quarterback Corey Evans.

A three-and-out series from Chapel Hill produced the game’s first punt. But Webb muffed the reception and again relinquished possession, this time at their own 44. Chapel Hill marched the ball up the field, converting on two fourth-down plays before Darius Allen finally, on the first play of the second quarter, ran the ball in from six yards out for his second touchdown. The Tigers missed the extra point, but led 13-0.

Webb received the ball on the 30 yard-line on the kickoff, and again used their ground game to move the ball. The Tiger defense redeemed two offsides penalties by keeping Webb out of the end zone on 4th-and-goal at the two yard-line. Chapel Hill took its 13-0 lead and 134 yards of total offense into the half.

Two big throws from quarterback T.J. Johnson to Grant DeSelm and Alex Duncan compensated for poor starting field position on Chapel Hill’s first drive of the half. Allen ran the ball 15 yards for his third touchdown of the contest, capping off a 94-yard drive.

“Darius, he’s been there all season,” Marsh said. “We’ve just got to keep doing the little things, keep him healthy. He’s just got to stay focused, and if he can do that, we can continue to play for a little while longer.”

CHHS missed the two-point conversion.

With four minutes left in the fourth quarter, Eddie Burgard scored on one of the game’s few passing plays, converting a beautiful over-the-shoulder catch on the right sideline into a 55-yard touchdown. Chapel Hill’s point-after attempt hit the upright.

On their final drive of the game, the Warriors began a drive from the Tiger 48 and advanced quickly. But Chapel Hill forced 4th and 10 and repossessed the ball at its six yard-line.

“We just turned up the tempo in practice this week,” Marsh said. “We told them we need to see speed. Last week, the game against Northern Vance woke us up. I’m definitely pleased with the way we responded.”
